The Good Side of GMOs
Though it may seem hard to believe, GMOs were originally benevolent. Their goal was to help those who needed it but couldn't be helped by anything else. This became a huge help in thrid world or developing countries, feeding the poor and sewing the seeds of renewal.
General Benefits
The general benefits of GMOs are obvious in a way. They were originally put into plants for an increased crop ield, larger plants, longer growing season. This first modifications were rarely negative and often helped the farmers and markets that used these plants. Eventually though, GMOs evolved. They started using more creative modifications: pesticides in the husks, herbicide resistance (so that the plants could be drowned in chemicals), and other questionable strategies. These are what started to turn GMOs towards the dark side and ultimately created our negative view on them that most people see today.
Golden Rice
Golden rice was an invention for countries who produced primarily rice. Vitamins that lacked in rice caused many children to lose their eyesight and have overall bad health. This was aided by the introduction of "Golden RIce", an invention created for these groups of people specifically. The corn was modified to create the vitamins necessary for these children to see correctly and live good and healthy life. This rice was considered the first beneficial example of GMOs and was taken by the public as a success for GMOs. This humanitarian tool became the poster child for GMOs and allowed the continuation of the study and widespread use.
